President's Message
Spring -Summer 2006
by Tracey Amernick, CPCE

Greetings Members,

It's hard to believe Spring is over, seems the time just continues to fly by. It's been a terrific year so far for the Chapter, we have already had some great programs. We have planned a fun summer for you, and are also busy working on our fall events, there are some real surprises coming up!

We are finishing up our 3rd CPCE Study Group, and plans for a fall study group are in the works. Please contact Angie Kemp, our CPCE Chair, and Board member Angie Kemp at akemp@thedana.net for more information if you are interested in joining this group. Congratulations again to all our current and future CPCE members for their dedication and hard work! At last count, we are tied with Florida for having the most CPCE's in the Nation. With the "CPCE" designation after your name on a business card, you have a distinct advantage over most other caterers, and the added knowledge to make a difference in your business. <more...>

Membership News
August 2006
by Duffy Fainer

We have 122 members in San Diego as of August 8, and we seem to be experiencing a surge this year. We're happy to see new and enthusiastic faces, who understand the value of membership in an established association such as ours. You can see the faces of many new members at the bottom of this newsletter.

I just changed my VISA Merchant vendor to the one on the NACE National Member Benefits page. I'll save at least $100. this year. There's lot's of benefits and discounts I wasn't even aware of on that page. Take a look.

If you're changing jobs, you might be able to "take" your membership with you, and the person replacing you, might "get" your membership for up to 6 months...free! Read about this, under the "Provisional" definition. http://www.sdnace.org/membershipform.html

Email me if you have any changes to your contact information, questions, or have issues of concern.

NACE members and their guests enjoyed a wonderful summer evening this past Tuesday at The Dana on Mission Bay. Produced by Director of Catering Angie Kemp, CPCE, Executive Chef Jose Hernandez and Chef De Cuisine Jerry Sorenson… everything was done with style and panache!

We began at the outdoor courtyard near the bayside pool and were greeted by the “Sounds of Flamenco Jazz Fusion” 4-piece band by David de Alva with Gitan Productions. They spiced up the summer night with Latin-based fusion and Smooth Jazz beat. Hors d'oeuvres were tray-passed and displayed Sea Scallops, Crab Meat with Gingered Caviar, and delightfully Fresh Seasonal Fruits. One item that was particularly interesting was strawberries stuffed with Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese. Garnished with Sprigs of Fresh Mint, they were a one-bite pop-in-your-mouth treat prepared in the “deconstruction style” that has become so popular with the Miami Beach set. The flavor and presentation was that of Reverse Strawberry Cheesecake. Pretty cool!

As dinner drew near, the floor-to-ceiling curtains rose on the Mission Bay Ballroom and revealed a softly lit space set in shades of Citron and Bittersweet Tangerine by BBJ Linens, who supplied chair covers, sashes and lamoure floor-length cloths. The room was a celebration of summer colors with a hint of fall in the air. Centerpieces were beautifully arranged Orchids, Roses, and Dahlias arranged in Dupioni Silk-Wrapped vases… simple and elegant settings all donated by Organic Elements. Bars were set in the back of the room utilizing the ever-hip “Vertical Buffets” with pin-spotted mini DJ lights for a steel and glass techno touch.

Our speaker for the evening was the dynamic and vivacious Gina Freize, President of Venissimo Cheese Shop located in Mission Hills on Washington Street. Gina stocks the most versatile selection of cheeses in San Diego and if you stop in, she’ll sample you with delicacies from around the world. Pre-set for us were four distinctly different cheeses; Cana de Cabra, P’tit Basque, Pleasant Ridge Reserve, and Roaring Forties Blue. We were tasted in flights much as you would wine, from soft and mellow, to nutty and big, and Gina regaled us with stories of cheese making history, regions and production techniques.

Dinner was creatively executed and recipes were written to include each of the cheeses we had just tasted. Salad was Treviso, Endive and Baby Spinach with Crispy Pancetta, Pear Tomatoes, Pleasant Ridge Crisp and Roasted Shallot Vinaigrette. The Chicken Roulade Entrée incorporated P’tit Basque with Proscuitto, Roasted Bell Peppers, and Swiss Chard. Dessert was interestingly unique… house-made Strawberry Cheesecake was infused with Roaring Forties Blue Cheese and Balsamic Macerated Strawberries.

As we left that evening the moon was just beginning to rise over the bay and we bid farewell to our last meeting of the Summer of ’06. We’re all looking forward to our first-ever luncheon meeting to be held on Tuesday, September 12th at The Mission Valley Sheraton. Our speaker will be the highly acclaimed Roger B. Price presenting his sought after Primal Marketing Campaign. See you there!

Affiliate's Corner

It was my pleasure to introduce Rose and Bob Jacobson of A Special Moment Photography.

Rose was in the LA area and Bob was here in San Diego when they met, and guess what, they met on an internet dating service. It was love at first image and after a brief probation period, they married after seven months. They are very happy together and have many parallel interests, including photography, family and traveling.

They both had successful careers in real estate but retired from it many years ago to concentrate exclusively on their photography business. Both have been in photography for many years. Bob actually shot his first wedding in high school for $25, using a camera that needed the bulb replaced after every shot (remember those?!!). Rose says that working with a spouse can be either heaven or hell. Luckily for them, it’s been a heavenly experience!

They live in Del Mar Heights, have four boys and two girls (one daughter’s wedding is this Saturday!), and they have ten grandchildren.

Their passion for photography has been focused on weddings and it was reflected in the DVD they showed us at the meeting. So, here’s to their continued success and hopefully you will get a chance to work with them soon!

If you are interested in showcasing your business to the NACE members, please call or email me. I am working on the fall schedule and would love to add you to the lineup. Keep in mind, you don’t have to make a verbal presentation (not everyone is comfortable speaking in front of a crowd!) You can showcase on a table too! The important thing is, that this is a great networking opportunity! If you don’t take advantage of it, you are missing out on reaching your fellow NACE members. Remember, this isn’t about what the primary members can do for you, it's what can you do for them and your business!

I look forward to hearing from my wonderful affiliate members!

Community Service
by Nancy Changnon-Baron

August 2006 Friends of Scott

This year, we've chosen Friends of Scott as the foundation to direct our community service and fundraising for. Friends of Scott is a non-profit organization that was founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo who lost his life to childhood cancer. The Friends of Scott Foundation (FSF) is committed to helping children with cancer and their families. San Diego NACE will help to contribute money and support, to ensure they receive the emotional and financial support needed to cope with this devastating disease. FSF strives to bring Childhood Cancer Awareness to the community.

At the August meeting, San Diego NACE amassed several hundered toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste, which is a part of building a "Back to School Backpack" for a hundred kids. At the October Gala Fundraiser, we'll finish the job, putting together school supplies and much more for a final presentation.

Here's AnnaMaria Sanfilippo taking a limo full of kids to the Del Mar Races.
